I took the plunge and have just updated all my machines to El Capitan, despite the many horror messages on the Mac Store.
So far so good and I must say I've been very happy with the performance of my upgraded Yosemite.
I use Office 2011 and it seems to be working fine (except for Outlook 2011 which I don't use), though users of Office 2016 have reported some serious bugs.
Some of the software which I found incompatible (will add as I re-open more of my existing software and apps:
